Ghana is expanding its overseas employment drive with the deployment of more than 100 health workers to Grenada, where they are expected to help fill gaps in the country’s healthcare workforce.
The medical professionals will work in different healthcare facilities across the Caribbean nation under renewable two-year contracts. Their deployment falls under the government’s Labour Export Programme, which seeks to connect Ghanaian professionals with employment opportunities in countries facing labour shortages.
Ahead of their departure, Chief of Staff Dr Julius Debrah reminded the workers that their behaviour abroad would influence how Ghana and its professionals are regarded. He urged them to demonstrate integrity and discipline, emphasising that academic qualifications alone would not guarantee the success of their assignments. “Your certificate or your qualification may open the door for you, but your character will determine how long the door will be kept open,” he said.
Labour, Jobs and Employment Minister Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum also cautioned the workers against breaching their contractual obligations. He urged them to carry out their responsibilities diligently, maintain professional standards and return to Ghana when their contracts end. “Go and work well, don’t mess up. Try and raise the flag of Ghana. Be professional. Professionalism is key. This is what we expect from you,” he said.
The minister revealed that discussions and preparations were progressing towards sending additional nurses to Germany and other Caribbean countries. The planned deployments form part of broader efforts to open up international job markets for Ghanaian healthcare professionals.
Through the Labour Export Programme, the government aims to create employment opportunities beyond Ghana while helping partner countries meet workforce demands in essential sectors. Healthcare remains a key area of focus, with the Grenada deployment providing another opportunity for Ghanaian professionals to work abroad under formal employment arrangements.
