Newly sworn-in Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, has pledged that the commission will discharge its electoral responsibilities without fear or favour, while calling on Ghanaians to actively participate in strengthening the institution.

Dr Asamoah made the commitment on Monday, October 12, 2026, during his swearing-in ceremony, speaking on behalf of himself and fellow Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo.

He urged citizens to engage with the EC, offer constructive criticism and contribute to efforts to build a stronger institution capable of delivering credible elections.

“We expect Ghanaians to engage the Electoral Commission, to participate in the commission, to critique the commission in order to make it a perfect institution that you all help to create,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment to impartiality, Dr Asamoah added: “May we seek your audience and may we seek your power here, Mr President, to promise that we will deliver without fear or favour.”

Credible Elections Require Collective Responsibility

The newly sworn-in deputy chairperson stressed that credible elections cannot be achieved through the efforts of the Electoral Commission alone, describing the process as a shared national responsibility.

“Credible elections are therefore the responsibility of this commission, but it is not the responsibility of the commission alone. It is a national duty,” he said.

He identified political parties, Parliament, the security services, civil society organisations, the judiciary, the media and ordinary citizens as essential stakeholders whose cooperation is necessary to ensure credible electoral processes.

“Political parties, parliament, security services, civil society, the judiciary, the media and every citizen must play a role. And we call on all of you to join hands with us,” he added.

Dr Asamoah’s remarks underscore the importance of public participation, institutional collaboration and accountability in strengthening electoral governance and public confidence in Ghana’s democratic processes.

His pledge comes as he and Emelia Afi Agbenyo assume their new roles at the Electoral Commission, with expectations that they will contribute to the commission’s mandate of administering elections in a credible, transparent and impartial manner.
